Who’s Who in Islam: Bigots, Reformers, Apologists/Regressives, Religious Sociopaths

Atheist Marwa Berro, in her Hezbollah days.

Where Are the Muslim Reformers?  All over. They’re blogging, they’re forming societies, some are apostates, some have kept the faith, some live in the West, some live in their home countries. Some have been assassinated, imprisoned, or receive tangible death threats. We need to focus on Reformers. The fact that many need pseudonyms speaks to the problem. Even Marwa Berro, an atheist who blogs against her forced veiling and Muslim upbringing, needed a couple years of freedom before she wrote under her real name. So what’s the problem?

The Dialectic:  The ideological tension between humanism and extremism regarding Islam.

Who Helps the Cause? – The Reformers engage in the dialectic between benevolent and evil ideology to promote universal ideals of human decency. The Politically Incorrect and Well-Intentioned have flaws, yet stand with the cause.

The Cause:  Peace.

Reformer vs. Politically Incorrect Reformer

Who Hurts the Cause? –  The Soft Moderates/Apologists who have a Potemkin Village view of Islam. They mistake religion for race and make false analogies. Their religious chauvinism amounts to bigotry. Though they care about stopping evil, they struggle to define the root causes as they champion the bromides of  political correctness and moral placebos. They end up hurting the ideals of the Reformers. CAIR and the Soft Moderates/Apologists protect the bigotry of their religion.

“Jihadism has gone from fringe cult to a mass movement because non-violent extremists have too often gone unchallenged.”Ghaffar Hussain, managing director of Quilliam

Bigots:  The Bigots go after all Muslims without compulsion, some stand for freedom and democracy, though as absolutists. They hate all Muslims, and fail to quantify.

Polemics:  Both Lost Moderates and Bigots exacerbate the polemics. Regardless, the main enemies are the Religious Sociopaths, who hate everyone but themselves.

Religious Supremacist Rabia “Bill Maher bugs me more than Bilal Philips” Chaudry

Regressives/Apologists:  Unlike Reformers, none of these people/groups have been threatened with death by Islamic radicals. They falsely claim to be progressive or moderate. Their stand for human rights fails because they either fear religion, or they support apostasy and blasphemy laws, homophobia, religious chauvinism (Jiyza tax), misogyny (sexual slavery), and other polemical topics clearly delineated in religion:

  1. Factual correction: I was never a Hezbollah trainee. Those are official categories. I merely lived under its ideological and cultural dominance.

    Thanks.

  2. I think that these categories are over broad and inaccurate. Ex-Muslims and non-Muslims should not be categorized as ‘Reformers’ alongside people who do advocate a ‘reconstructed’ Islamic identity (such as Ziauddin Sardar or Maajid Nawaz). I think ‘Refusenik’ (Manji’s preferred term) would be a better category for this group of thinkers. Maryam Namazie has advocated very strongly against being lumped in with Muslims simply because of her country of origin or the religion of her ancestors and you do those who have outright rejected Islam a disservice in doing so. Positing people who were never Muslim (‘nevermoose’ as we call them amongst ourselves) as reformers is rather paternalistic. On the other side of the spectrum, I think it is rather poor judgement to lump in conservative jerks like Zakir Naik with actual terrorists. Similarly, I think the intellectual honesty requires us to recognize a difference between conservative Christians and violent anti-abortion groups. You can argue (and I would agree) that there is a causal relationship of sorts in that the conservatives provide an ideological lens that distorts the world such that militancy seems more justified but that does not negate that conservatives and militants are still two distinct categories.

  3. Suggestion to Add to Soft Moderates/Apologists: Arsalan Iftikhar

    • @Hiba,

      Redacted. Thanks.

      @Luke,

      Good points. My definitions of “Reformer” and so on are subjective, and thus there’s room for interpretation. Certainly, sub-categories are reasonable, and Maryam Namazie’s view of Islam contrasts with Irshad Manji’s and Maajid Nawaz.

      I write (and read) to learn and engage with others who share mutual interests. Thanks for your opinions.

      @Arjun,

      Thx for the suggestion. Arsalan’s an interesting case. He stands more with the apologists, and as editor of The Islamic Monthly he’s responsible for much of its content, some thoughtful, some transparently sympathetic to the religious chauvinists.

      Peace.

  4. “They mistake religion for race”
    BINGO !!!

    First scientifically there is no basis for different “races” of humans.
    Secondly even if there was a scientific basis for “race” generally means born into, rather than something that can be joined.
    Thirdly it is getting to be the most misused PC word in the English language. So I suspect Muslims that claim “racism” are just copying others.

    The word they are looking for is “bigotry” not “race” Which is fine except so many Muslims at the same time defend everything purportedly to be “Islamic” as If it was beyond reproach. Which if Islam really is the religion of peace is just silly. Not all of the words spoken in the name of Islam came from Allah whether you believe in Islam or not. It is not for faithful Muslims to defend such false Islamic ideas, but instead loudly scream condemnation of them.

    If Muslims do not speak out against things falsely represented as being from their religion then they are not really Muslims because they are literally allowing Allah’s words to be taken in vain. By the very definition subverting Allah and Islam to worldly non Islamic goals.

    • Bullshit, there’s no Allah. Has he ever shown himself to you or is it one of those truths the religion of peace forced you to accept?

  8. How can anyone compare Hamas to IDF?? Do you even know the history of the conflict? There are no Palestinians who lost anything. They invaded and occupied in mass mobs, like Muslims do to Europe right now. That’s exactly how it all started after 1920. Israel’s borders were drawn in 1917.
    Hamas official admits Palestinians never came from Palestine. Half are from Egypt and the other half from Saudi Arabia. There you go. All jihad for Allah, that’s the only background behind that conflict and the jewish people are demonized fr defending themselves against terrorism and demanded to give up even more land although they have already handed 77% of their land to the occupiers.

    November 10, 2015 at 6:27 am

    • Thx, Paul, I’m going to have to learn more about Aykol. I thought about putting him straight up as reformer, but it seems he’s in the middle, and equivocates regarding apostasy laws, slavery, the hadith, and so forth, in the same manner that Qasim Rashid and Kashif C. end up supporting religious bigotry, whether accidentally or intentionally.

      But I’ll read more on Aykol first.

      Thx,
